I’m an esthetician here at Casa Verde Salon and Spa and the two questions I get asked frequently in my wax room are:
- Does it hurt?
- Is it true that waxing makes the hair grow back thicker and faster?
Waxing hurts, there’s no way around it. There are things you can do to help minimize the pain like avoid caffeine 24 hours before your appointment or use a numbing cream (we offer No Scream Cream for $19.50). But don’t worry! The best thing about waxing is that if you get waxed on a consistent basis (typically every 4 weeks), your hair becomes finer and grows slower, making the hair removal process easier to bare (get it? BARE? I’m so funny).
When you shave your razor cuts a sharp edge, which is often at the thickest point of the hair shaft. This not only makes the hair appear darker but it gives the feeling that the hair is “thicker”. The hair on your face, body, and scalp is continuously growing, which is why getting on a consistent wax schedule is important. Waxing removes the hair from the root and will leave your skin hair-free for about 3 weeks. After this point new hairs will begin to appear and within a week of this regrowth is when you’ll be ready for your next wax.
Aftercare plays an important part in the maintenance of your wax service. Your hair follicle will be open for the next 24 hours so it’s important to avoid warm baths, hot tubs, saunas or anything involving excessive heat and perspiration. Exfoliating the area will help to remove dry skin and prevent ingrown hairs. Using a good moisturizer will hydrate, illuminate, and restore the skin. We carry Deck Scrub exfoliating scrub and Deck Polish daily moisturizing balm from Zandi K which was created for those who wax or shave.
Everyone reacts differently to waxing which means the pain level will vary from person to person, but when done properly and with a trained technician, the ouch-factor should be minimal. And remember, it’s YOUR body so if you are uncomfortable speak up! Don’t suffer through a service if you don’t have to.
I hope this helps clear up some myths about waxing but if you have further questions consult with your technician to ensure you receive the best waxing experience.
